Dark hair, dark cloaks, sneaky behavior is a trope for a bad guy. Golden hair, white dresses, loves birds is a trope for a good guy.

Queer aspects like feminine men, being overly concerned with fashion, having close male relationships but no wife, etc. Herbert was writing in a time and genre where explicitly showing a male character as having sex with men was not completely taboo, but also absolutely seen as deviant and evil.

The conflation of men having sex with men and predatory behavior is pervasive and unfortunately still really common. As critical readers, we can see the use of this trope and think about what the author is doing, critique it and talk about it without rejecting the work out of hand.

What was Herbert trying to do? Tell us that gay people are bad? Show us how evil the Baron is? I'd argue more the latter than the first though there are other incidents of Herbert's homophobia in other books. That's a question for each individual reader. The trope is harmful, but talking about it lets us see it both in other art and in the harmful ways our culture applies this trope to real people.

We expect more from modern writers, and it is good to talk about it, but it is, in my opinion, not worth rejecting the book out of hand. Dec 30, PM. I agree, it is problematic. It is striking they downplayed the gayness in the recent film. One thing I did nevertheless find interesting about the Baron in the books is that although other characters mention his homosexuality in the books, they only ever do so in passing - if Baron harkonen gay recall baron harkonen gay no one ever refers to his homosexuality as a signifier of his badness.

Or so I recall - it is a while since I read the sequels in particular.

Examining Homosexual Representation in Dune: Part Two

Jan 15, AM. He's despicable in other ways, but Hebert drops in hints of his sexual acts as a stinger at the end of a chapter, too, for the most impact. Generally I wasn't as impressed with the character as a villain because of this, never descending to depths of joyous loathing as I have with other great fiends of fiction.

Feb 03, PM. I do think that while his sexuality and villany have an all-too disappointing correlation, you have to consider the time period. Feb 12, AM. Baron is one disappointing villain. I have expected more for a Harkonnen like him.
